Acterra, a Silicon Valley-based non-profit, has developed an innovative program to tackle residential energy and water waste. Green@Home House Calls uses trained volunteers to coach residents on energy and water savings opportunities in their home and install free energy-saving devices. The service is available to renters or owners, so the Green@Home program can serve an entire community.
Currently, Green@Home is available for free for residents in Palo Alto, Menlo Park, Redwood City, Cupertino, and Sunnyvale.
What to ExpectDuring a Green@Home House Call, you'll receive free energy saving products and a customized savings plan. Your Green@Home volunteer will help you take some simple actions to get your savings started. House Call activities include:
- Checking the temperature of your fridge, and resetting the temperature as needed.
- Inflating your car tires to increase your miles per gallon.
- Installing flow restrictors or aerators to lower water use water for your faucets and sinks.
- Checking the temperature of your water heater, and resetting as needed.
- A programmable thermostat is provided and installed, free of charge.
- Three CFL bulbs will be provided and installed.
At the end of your Green@Home House Call, you'll receive a lawn
sign about the free program.
The Green@Home House Calls program provides practical and
immediate energy saving steps for residents to save energy. It also
creates energy saving awareness amongst residents and
volunteers.
Since 2007, the Green@Home program has served over 450 residents in
Silicon Valley. Volunteer teams currently serve about 30 residents
a week in five communities: Cupertino; Menlo Park; Redwood City;
Palo Alto; and Sunnyvale.
The Green@Home program is very cost effective. Cities considering
subsidies for residential energy audits will find that their
dollars stretch further with the Green@Home House Calls. Acterra
can provide detailed quantitative information about the program's
long-term energy saving results.
